Top 10 Crochet Tools Every Crafter Should Have in Their Kit

Crocheting is a relaxing and enjoyable craft, but the right tools are key to success. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, a few essential tools can enhance your experience and help you create beautiful projects.
From hooks to accessories that keep your work organized, here's a list of the top 10 crochet tools every crafter should have in their kit.

1. Crochet Hooks (Variety of Sizes)

  • Why You Need It: The crochet hook is, of course, the most essential tool in your kit. Hooks come in different sizes, typically ranging from 2mm to 15mm or larger. The size of the hook you use will depend on the yarn thickness and the type of project you're working on.

  • Tip: Start with a set of hooks in multiple sizes to cover a wide range of yarns and patterns. Most beginner kits include hooks in popular sizes like 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm.

  • My recommendation: This is the set I started with and still using.

2. Yarn (Variety of Fibers and Colors)

  • Why You Need It: You can’t crochet without yarn! Choosing the right yarn for your project is crucial for achieving the desired texture and durability. Yarn comes in many weights, from fine lace to bulky, and in a wide range of fibers like cotton, wool, and acrylic.

  • Tip: For beginners, it's best to start with a medium-weight yarn (like worsted weight) and experiment with different fibers.

  • My favorite: Red Heart Super Saver and Caron Pound of Love are my favorite yarns. Both are nice quality medium-weight acrylic yarn and come in a variety of colors and shades. They are also budget-friendly.

3. Yarn Needle (Tapestry Needle)

  • Why You Need It: A yarn needle is a large-eyed, blunt-tipped needle used to weave in yarn ends and sew pieces of your crochet project together. It’s indispensable for finishing your projects neatly.

  • Tip: Keep several on hand in different sizes for various yarn thicknesses. Most yarn needles are made of metal or plastic, and the metal ones tend to be sturdier.

  • When you buy a set like mine it comes with a bunch of metal yarn needles. I still use the same ones.

4. Stitch Markers

  • Why You Need It: Stitch markers help you keep track of important points in your crochet project, such as the beginning of a round, or where increases or decreases need to be made. They are especially useful in patterns that involve shaping or counting stitches.

  • Tip: You can find locking stitch markers (that close like a clasp) and traditional stitch markers (that hook onto your stitch). Both types are handy, but locking stitch markers are particularly great for keeping track of rounds in circular work.

5. Measuring Tape

  • Why You Need It: A soft, flexible measuring tape is crucial for ensuring your project is the correct size. Whether you’re making garments, blankets, or accessories, measuring tape will help you keep track of length and width, or even check your gauge.

  • Tip: Choose a measuring tape with both inches and centimeters for versatility, especially if you follow patterns that use different systems of measurement.

  • Sometimes you will find a simple measuring tape with the set of your hooks. If not, you can get retractable ones like these for easy carry and compact storage.

6. Scissors

  • Why You Need It: Having a sharp pair of scissors in your kit is essential for cutting yarn, trimming ends, and even snipping tiny strands for neat finishes.

  • Tip: Opt for a small, sharp pair of scissors that are easy to handle and store in your crochet bag. Some crafters even use thread snips for precision!

  • I love these fancy ones. But you can get a simple one too.

7. Row Counter

  • Why You Need It: A row counter helps you keep track of your progress as you crochet, especially in patterns that involve a lot of rows or intricate stitch patterns. This small tool is incredibly handy for preventing mistakes and ensuring you’re on track.

  • Tip: There are digital and manual row counters available. Some even clip to your crochet hook, making them easy to access while you work.

  • I don’t personally use them. But if you are planning a big project with lots of rows, like a big blanket or a dress or skirt with lighter yarn, you should grab a row counter.

8. Blocking Mats and Pins

  • Why You Need It: Blocking your finished crochet pieces is the final step to achieving professional-looking results. Blocking mats allow you to shape your work by pinning it in place and then steaming or wetting it to set the stitches.

  • Tip: Invest in a set of interlocking foam mats, which can be easily expanded or rearranged for different-sized projects. Blocking pins are also necessary for securing your work to the mats.

  • I use the alphabet mats from Home Depot. Get them on sale to save money.

9. Project Bag

  • Why You Need It: A dedicated crochet bag keeps all your tools, yarn, and finished pieces organized in one place. Look for a bag with compartments for hooks, yarn, and accessories to keep everything easy to access and tidy.

  • Tip: Choose a bag with a sturdy zipper or closures to prevent yarn from getting tangled or spilling out.

  •  I have not used a dedicated project bag in my crochet journey. You can find a variety of them online.

10. Yarn Bowl or Yarn Holder

  • Why You Need It: A yarn bowl or holder is a great accessory for keeping your yarn neat and tangle-free while you crochet. It helps prevent your yarn from rolling around as you work, and some yarn bowls are designed with holes to guide the yarn out smoothly.

  • Tip: Wooden or ceramic yarn bowls are popular, but if you’re on the go, you can use a simple yarn holder made from plastic or mesh to keep your yarn contained.

  • I use mesh bags or drawstring bags for this purpose.

Bonus: Crochet Pattern Books or Apps

  • Why You Need It: A good pattern can make your crochet journey much more enjoyable and productive. Whether it’s a physical pattern book or a digital app, having easy access to a wide variety of patterns will keep you motivated and inspired.

  • Tip: There are many free and paid apps available that allow you to track your projects, row counts, and stitch patterns. Alternatively, explore crochet books that offer step-by-step guides and patterns for all levels.

With these top 10 crochet tools, you’ll be fully equipped to tackle any crochet project that comes your way. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been crocheting for years, having the right tools can make your crafting experience more enjoyable and successful. So, gather your hooks, yarn, and accessories, and get ready to create something beautiful!
